Day of Mourning
April 28, 2004 - 07:00pm EST
The Day of Mourning, in recognition of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered occupational diseases as a result of their work began in Canada 20 years ago and participation in these recognition activities occurs throughout the world.
Many of our workers from Sterling will be participating in this event.
Our brothers and sisters from Local 1001 will be gathering at Pinafore Park in St. Thomas, followed by a meeting at the Elgin Labour Center in St. Thomas.
This April 28th, the CAW is focusing on the asbestos issue, which has killed so many members.
The CAW is asking members throughout the union to examine their workplaces to find out where asbestos may be found (often found in ceilings, walls, around pipes and boilers, building cladding, cement, ceiling tiles, roof tiles), make sure it is identified clearly, wrapped up safely, and removed by experienced, qualified personnel. When asbestos becomes friable (crumbly) it can get into the workplace air and breathed in by workers. When they breathe it in, it can cause cancer and lung diseases.
