A CANADIAN UNION FOR CANADIAN WORKER'S

We are the members of the CAW - Canada Local 1120, an organization of thousands of members united in the struggle to improve the lives of our members, their families, and the communities in which they live.

Our Local Union was formed by a group of members who decided it was time to establish our Canadian identity as Trade Unionists. On March 2nd, 2000, thousands of members voted to pursue disaffiliating from our International Union and establishing ourselves as a Canadian Union for Canadian Workers. This vote was a commitment to join CAW-Canada.

We would like to acknowledge the leadership (former Executive Board) that was in place when we took this bold action -- Jack Drewes, Marg Arnone, Paul Middleton, Kathy Knauff, Shawn Bishop, Leslie Mancini, Andy Savela, John Speers, Katha Fortier, Amy Albert, Janice Carr, Laurie Lessard, Josie Vickruck, Michael Terlicher, Jean Verrette, Peter Sabourin, Jennifer Ellis, and Richard Armstrong, Chief Stewards, Stewards, Volunteers and Bricklayers Union Local 29.

The Chief Stewards in the workplaces were very instrumental in informing their membership in their Bargaining Units. The Chief Stewards that were in place at that time were Diana Senko, Extendicare Van Daele; Joan Foster, Extendicare Tendercare; Connie Doucette, Lady Dunn Health Centre; Janice Carr, Sault Area Hospitals, Service and Laurie Lessard, Sault Area Hospitals, Office & Technical and Linda Williamson, Thessalon.

Also at that time workers at St. Joseph's General Hospital in Elliot Lake wanted to leave their Local and become a Canadian Union. Kerry Papineau who was the Chief Steward at that time, was very instrumental in helping his Unit. This Unit then joined to become part of CAW Local 1120.

We are committed to building global solidarity and creating communities built on the principles of equality, socio-economic justice, moral responsibility and dignity. We will build a CanadianUnion.

We are committed to building our Union through the education and organizing of members.

We believe that a strong Union respects the democratic wishes of its members. Our local was formed because we demanded that we have the right to democratically determine our own destiny. We are committed to ensuring that all Union members have the right to determine their own destiny. We believe in Social Unionism.
