February 2, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

The January 2010 meeting of the C.A.W. Local 1451 Retirees Chapter was well attended by many of our members. We were able to hear from Leana Pendergast, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, who explained the McGuinty governmentís Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and patiently answered questions from our members.

Other business included a moment of silence in memory of five of our members who passed away since our last business meeting in November. Our condolences to the family and friends of Brothers David Mills, Peter Ancich, Jack Soares, Ron Lindhorst and Robert Martinow.

We have struck a Bylaws Committee responsible for drafting a set of bylaws for our Retireesí Chapter. Once the local union finally closes down this year, it will be necessary to have a set of rules to govern the stand alone retireesí chapter and we hope to have that done before our summer recess. The members of that committee are Joe Soulier, Bob Cruickshank, Larry Aberle, Fred Morrissey and Kenn Wright. Once these bylaws have been drafted they will be brought before our membership for discussion and approval. We must then send them to the C.A.W. National office for approval and once this is done, they become our bylaws.

The following Executive Board Recommendations were carried in their entirety:
1. To have a standard agenda for each monthly meeting
2. To affiliate with the following organizations:
-The Waterloo Regional Council of Retirees at a cost of $340
-The Ontario Federation of Retirees at a cost of $250
-The Canadian Union Retirees Council at a cost of $200
-The National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation at a cost of $7
3. To reimburse the Chapter Chairperson $179.30, for hosting the Area C.A.W. Retireesí Council meeting on Dec. 8th, 2009.
4. To pay up to $200.00, the cost of hosting the Area C.A.W. Council once a year.
5. To elect three delegates at the February 2010 meeting for the Area C.A.W. Council.
6. To pay the necessary costs for the June 2010 Retireesí Barbeque.
7. To pay the necessary costs for letterhead, envelopes, postage and stationary supplies.
8. That all information for the Retireesí website be approved by the President
9. To elect members to the following Standing Committees: Recreation, Municipal Affairs and Bylaws
10. To elect the necessary delegates to affiliated organizations when appropriate.
11. That all materials on the sign-in table be approved by the Retireesí Executive

The Chapter Chairperson reported that there will be a Medication Awareness Seminar held at the Union Hall on February 24th, 2010 from 9 AM to 12 PM. Anyone who is interested in attending should please contact Joe Soulier at 519-741-1025. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number so Joe can get back to you.

Mike Devine, President of Local 1451 gave a short report before introducing Ms. Pendergast. He stressed that anyone having problems dealing with Medavie Blue Cross should contact him immediately.

In introducing Ms. Leana Pendergast, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, Mike made the point that when our Plant announced itís closure, John Milloy, Karen Redman, Andrew Telegdi and Ms. Pendergast, all contacted him offering what help they could after the devastating announcement. He stressed that they are all from the Liberal party and the two area Conservatives, Harold Albrecht and Gary Goodyear couldnít be bothered calling or commenting on the closure.

The membership voted to send $200 to the Haiti Relief Fund and encourages all of us to do whatever we can to help after this gigantic human tragedy. It will take years to bring life back to normal in this, the poorest of western hemisphere countries.

Our next regular membership meeting will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 18th, 2010. At that time we will be electing three members to be our delegates to the C.A.W. Area Retireesí Council. We will also have representative from the Canada Pension Plan and Revenue Canada to speak and hopefully, answer a few questions.
We hope to see you all there.
