CAW Local 1459 Etobicoke Casting PLant

The History of Local 1459

Local 1459 received its first Charter on February 22, 1967. The Charter that was received was a UAW Charter that was maintained by 4 different Local Presidents: Roy Bennett, Albert Le Bel and Edmund Ferrari. Our 4th President Mike Holjevac helped to lead the Local into a CAW Charter on September 22, 1986. When Mike Holjevac retired at the end of 2003 our 5th President Joe Mota took the lead on the Executive Board of Local 1459 as President. We have come to our 6th President as Rod McGill takes the lead roll in 2011.

Local 1459 has had many trying times through out history with the ups and downs of the Automotive Industry. In late 70’s the wages and benefits of our members had fallen behind the other Automakers due to Chrysler almost going bankrupt. Local 1459 participated in a 5 week strike in 1982 to regain parity with the Ford and General Motors workers.

Local 1459 will celebrate it 40th anniversary on February 22, 2007. The Members and the Retirees of this Local are very proud people that will do what ever it takes to make sure this Local survives through out History.

In the past few years we have gone through many challenges and changes that will affect our future. On February 22, 2012 Local 1459 will come to it's 45th anniversary. As a Local we have been strong, to accept change and bring our local forward.
