IN THE BEGINNING
Loacl 219 was established in 1971 as members of the International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Papermill workers. In 1975, Local 219 went with the majority of pulp and paper unions in the maritimes, Quebec and parts of Ontario, and broke away from the U.S. controlled international union. At the same time, all the major pulp and paper companies forced us out on strike to try and break this new union. The Canadian Paperworkers Union, including Local 219, was born. In the early 90's, we merged with the communications and energy workers to form the CEP (Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union). In 2001, we broke away and joined the Independant Paperworkers Union and in 2002 we joined the Canadian Auto Workers Union.
