Over the past fifty years CAW Local 27 has been actively involved in supporting a large number of community-based charities and organizations. Through strong leadership in our Local Union and with our membership’s participation this will pave the way for future generations to make London and the community a better place to live.
Below are some brief descriptions of charities and organizations we support.

LONDON FOOD BANK
The London Food Bank opened its doors in 1986. Since that time it has become the key provider of food, not only to needy families but to over 20 other agencies such as the Salvation Army, Mission Services, Womens’ Community House, etc. All the food is given to those agencies at no charge.
No government funding is accepted at the London Food Bank. All resources are freely donated by the community and have been consistently sufficient to meet the ever increasing demands placed on the organization.
Client Information:
On average 2600 families per month visited the food bank in 2004. 40.9 % of the total individuals served were children under the age of 18 in 2001.
There was a doubling in the percentage of families coming to us that had no source of income. In 2004, 19.0% had listed no income: up from a percentage of 8.7% the year previous.
Incoming Food:
A total of 1.9 million pounds of food was donated in 2004. It was worth an estimated 4 million dollars (using the CAFB formula of 1lb=$2) and is a 7.1% increase over last year.
There was a 70,000 lb increase in the amount of food given to us by companies and organizations outside the London area through the Canadian and Ontario Association of Food Banks.
In the types of food, by far the most significant decrease was seen in the amount of assorted items donated.
There was less than 90,000 lbs or a 13.4% decrease. This is meaningful, because the “assorted” category is the staple or the centre-piece of the food hamper and is at the centre of our food drives.
There were however significant increases in the amount of meats, dairy, fruits and vegetables given.

UNITED WAY OF LONDON & MIDDLESEX
United Way’s priority is impact As the largest non-government funder of social service programs in London and Middlesex County, we have a responsibility to tackle our community’s most pressing problems and change people’s lives.
Whether it is a mentor for a troubled child or a safe and friendly place for an isolated senior, United Way invests donations in the highest-performing programs that give families, friends, neighbours and co-workers new opportunities for a better life.
We maximize every donation by funding a strong network of more than 75 programs at 40 community agencies. Over the past five years alone, United Way has put $21 million dollars into these critical programs that reach thousands of individuals and families each year.
With a highly focused approach in everything we do, we have identified priority areas that serve as a blueprint for determining how and where we invest our funding for the greatest possible impact.
Providing children and youth with the support and guidance needed to make healthy choices.
Providing newcomers and refugees with the skills they need to become contributing members of our community.
Giving support to families to help them cope with crisis and hard times.
Supporting independent living and reducing isolation for seniors.
Improving the quality of life for people with disabilities and health concerns.
Working with neighbourhoods and local communities to establish accessible and appropriate services for their residents.
Join us to make a powerful impact in our community. Without you, there would be no way.
