NDP leader Jack Layton Addresses CAW Council to standing ovation

April 17, 2004 - 01:00pm EST

Today, Jack Layton spoke to our CAW Council. His speech was insightful and well received by the CAW Council membership. Brother Layton discussed many of todayís areas of concern within our government. This represents a distinct change from the last federal election when the NDP leader accused the CAW of causing their eventual poor showing. It was during this past election that the NDP had presented such a poor platform that the CAW felt compelled to recommend to their membership that they should vote for the candidate most likely to defeat the incumbent. This is a welcome change from the recent past. Brother Layton received a strong ovation from the Council delegates. Iím sure that many of the delegates will return to their Local Unions and recommend to their memberships that they investigate the NDP party. This observer found that the Council delegates seemed relieved to again have the NDP as their political party. Hopefully this will mend some rifts the past NDP policy had created. It will be interesting to observe the next election results to see if this enthusiasm transfers into electoral seats.
