The History of Local 468

Although a relative newcomer to the CAW, Local 468 is no stranger to the labour movement. Long before we became affiliated with the CAW, we were proud members of the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU).

-----The Roots of the RWDSU-----

In the early 1930's a group of local unions in New York banded together to form what came to be known as the RWDSU. Originally chartered by the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1937, the RWDSU has grown far beyond its birthplace.

In 1954 the existing RWDSU merged with the Playthings, Jewelry and Novelty Workers Union and the Distributing, Processing and Office Workers Union. Over the years a number of other unions have also merged with the RWDSU, including AFL founder Sam Gompers' Cigar Makers in 1974. In October, 1993 the RWDSU affiliated with the 1.5 million member United Food and Commercial Workers.

In 1993, Local 468 became members of the United Steelworkers Union (USW).

The United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (United Steelworkers or USW) is the largest industrial labor union in North America, with 860,294 members.[1] Headquartered in Pittsburgh, U.S., the United Steelworkers represents workers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. The United Steelworkers represent workers in a diverse range of industries, including primary and fabricated metals, chemicals, glass, rubber, heavy-duty conveyor belting, tires, transportation, utilities, container industries, pharmaceuticals, call centers and health care.

-----1999 to 2013-----

Today Local 468 is proud to be a part of Canada's largest, and most diverse Union. A Union that embraces its autoworker history, and continues to expand, now representing a wide variety of sectors, such as gaming, hospitality, health-care, mining, fisheries and retail wholesale, to name a few.

The CAW is Canada's largest private sector union and one of the most diverse unions in the country. The CAW has a rich history of fighting for issues that affect working people, in Canada and around the world. Follow the links to find out more about the CAW's membership as well as the many unions that have merged with the CAW over the years.

Local 468 itself is made up of different sectors within the 13 units it represents, and continues to uphold its retail/wholesale history. 468 has continually led at the RW council level, with past and present 468 members holding elected positions within the RW council.

Local 468 remembers the proud traditions of its roots, while continually evolving and embracing every sector of the workforce.

Over the Labour Day weekend of 2013, 4000 delegates from the CAW and the CEP combined forces to create Unifor. The largest private sector Union in Canada. History was made as we go forward as part of Unifor. A new voice in the labour movement, stronger than ever with over 300,000 members from coast to coast to coast in almost every sector of the economy.
